Positive: I absolutely love this place!!! I’ve been both in the rainy season and cool season now. It’s an ideal homestay for those looking to get away quickly (c90 minutes out of Chiang Mai just off the Pai road) to an incredibly beautiful, untouched, natural setting in spectacularly picturesque rice terraces surrounded only by hills and forests, just outside a lovely Karen village and about as far from the tourist hordes as you can get. No need for tents, food or other camping gear…you stay in a nicely adapted rice field hut with amazing views to yourselves and food provided. It’s owned and run by Nui and his family (who are Karen) and is located in the middle of their rice fields just to the north of the village Ban Pang Ma-O. Nui and his wife Noon are teachers so busy during school hours but there always seem to be other family members around to look after you (certainly his mother and brother Man), cook up meals/coffee from the produce growing immediately around and take you on treks or motorbike rides. Nui speaks excellent English and seems pretty easy to get hold of. The homestay is in the middle of a bowl of the family and other villagers’ rice fields, ringed by hills and forests, with a stream (Mae Khrai) running right beside it, in an otherwise completely undeveloped spot. It’s ideal for just hanging out in perfect peace with nothing but the gorgeous views and sounds of the forest around you. Or if you’re feeling active and adventurous, there are plenty of great walks/rides through the surrounding fields, forests, villages and hills to other beauty spots nearby like hidden waterfalls a few hundred metres away in the forest or the amazing mountain top viewpoint of Doi Mon Angket, a 1840m peak about 4km west. Nui or other family members can guide you everywhere on foot or take you on motorbikes.
